Rest in Peace, Pop Pop
The journey of life has ended for a well-known car owner from
Mountain Speedway, the former Evergreen Raceway. Tom Wanick, Sr. of
Hazleton, PA passed away on March 1 with his Son Tom, Jr. and his
grandson, Tom III by his side.
Born in Hazleton, the United States Air Force veteran
was employed as a
supervisor of paving for Lisbon Co., Danboro before retiring. He was
a member of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Parish at St. Joseph Church,
Hazleton and dedicated his free time to funding and operating Wanick
Motorsports, his family owned race team.
During the Evergreen era and with New Jersey’s Chris Ammon behind
the wheel of his open wheel Modified, the team scored eleven
victories from 1992-2002. Their highlighting victory came when Ammon
took the checkered flag to score a Race of Champions victory, which
earned him a guaranteed staring spot in the prestigious Race of
champions.
Surviving are two children, Mary Lou Demshock, Hazleton; and Thomas
J. Wanick Jr. and his wife, Carmella Dulina, Hazleton; five
grandchildren, Robert Demshock, Mary Jo Demshock, Michael Demshock,
Kathleen Demshock and Thomas J. Wanick III and his fiancée, Kayla
Schegan; two great-grandchildren, Emily Wanick and Brianna Wanick;
and one sister, Eleanor Leonard, Hazleton. Wanick also has nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were held from Frank J. Bonin Funeral Home Inc.,
542 N. Wyoming St., Hazleton and mass was celebrated at Ss. Cyril
and Methodius Parish at St. Joseph Church.
Chris Ammon Has DNF in Turkey Derby
(11/30/10)- Following a
10 year hiatus from Wall Stadium, Chris Ammon teamed up with Wanick
Motorsports with high hopes of a great Turkey Derby finish, but
those hopes were dashed in the early going.
Ammon fought a loose car
in the feature while behind the wheel of the Franzosa
Excavating/Wanick Motorsports #1 Modified. However, he remained
patient and the team adjusted on the car. Just as it seemed like the
car was coming around and Ammon began to advance several positions,
the caution flew for another competitor. Ammon stopped on the
speedway and evidently unaware that he was there, the car in front
of Ammon threw his car in reverse and backed atop the hood of the
Franzosa Excavating Modified.
Ammon and the team were
disappointed with the DNF, yet Ammon seemed happy to have the
opportunity to run yet another Turkey Derby at Wall Stadium.
